Find out what's been happening at Shallow
Grange...
Did summer start? Either way, it now seems to have
finished. That said, we've snatched some gorgeous bright sunny days over the
last few weeks at Shallow Grange - so if you're in our neck of the woods and the
sun does shine, don't hesitate to pop over and pitch up!
The damp, warm weather does mean that the grass has been growing. In fact, we've
got more than enough now, which is ironic, after that very slow start in the
Spring when we were having to buy in the increasingly expensive feed for the
flock. We are still suffering the consequences of that with the number of ewes
who had mastitis. But, overall, the flock is doing well & we are now carefully
watching sheep prices.
Our two tearaway lambs, Lucy & Clyde, who seem to have learnt their skills from
Houdini, have now been issued with an Asbo each. After the last raid on the
garden plants & herbs, they have now been incarcerated behind electric fencing
in a back field. (Yet on one occasion, Clyde still managed to escape!)
We have a family of stoats living in the front garden. They seem to have made
their home in the ground under the dining room window & have given us several
dramatic "David Attenborough" moments with rabbit chases & battles with the
crows. We were also excited to see a buzzard & its fledglings in Back Dale. As
ever, the farm is full of life.
We are very pleased to report that the new lambing shed is complete (at long
last). The "girls" will be the most spoilt ewes in Derbyshire with the standard
of their maternity accommodation! With that big job out of the way, we can now
turn our minds to some of our green projects, like the capture of grey water &
replacing heating systems. Never a dull moment!
